This course contains detailed information on preparing work surfaces, what influences paints performances, and the differences between paint and Aqua Finishing’s recommended base coat (AquaBond™ and AquaSeal™).  It also covers the proper procedures for mixing and application of AquaGlaze®.  There is extensive theory on each of these instances.  After theory there are glazing demonstrations with different techniques and manipulation tools, as well as demonstrations on basecoat colors influences on glaze color.  Demonstrations on specific techniques will be suitable for a portfolio and performed under supervision.  These samples will include parchment, brush and blot, color blending, stria, tone on tone, crackling techniques, and simple marble - among others.

Some of the products you will be fully knowledgeable after this class include…

AquaBond

is a specially formulated basecoat with superb bonding capabilities.  When applied as a basecoat for glazing mediums AquaBond™ provides more open time and workability.  AquaBond™ adheres to wood, walls, laminate, concrete, and even micas.  AquaBond™ is also an excellent furniture refinishing product.  Stripping of the previous surface is not necessary.  It can be hand sanded to a satin patina or to a feathered edge (unlike most latex paint).  AquaBond™ is VOC compliant, low odor, a durable finish, soap and water clean up, chemical resistant, and interior/exterior rated.

AquaSeal™ seals in paint creating a durable, easy to work on surface designed specifically to work as a basecoat for decorative finishing when using AquaCreme™ or AquaGlaze®.  This product is primarily used when one of the AquaBond™ colors are not preferable.  AquaSeal™ is VOC compliant, low odor, soap and water clean up, and chemical resistant.

AquaGlaze® is a superior water based glazing medium containing high quality resins and proprietary materials.  AquaGlaze® has a unique viscosity.  It simply feels and moves differently than any other over the counter glazes giving it a very long open time.  AquaGlaze® can be tinted with AquaColor™ or acrylic latex paint.  It is the only positive negative glazing system available.  When tinting AquaGlaze® with paint, depth of color depends on the premixed tint of the latex paint.  Pastel colors contain more white and will appear more opaque.  Darker colors will have a more translucent appearance since there is a larger amount of color pigment.  AquaGlaze® also has soap and water clean up.

Crackle theory covers what makes paint or other materials crack.  What controls size, type, and direction of cracks.  Almost any material can be cracked and controlled, even in random areas.  Cracks can be used from Olde World themes right up to contemporary animal skins and a variety in between.  After theory a demonstration is proceeded by a “hands-on” with four different crackle patterns.  It is only the beginning into a vast world of crackle, but it is a sound first step which removes all of the guessing.

AquaCrackle®

is a superlative, professional quality crackle material which may be brushed, rolled, or sprayed.  Each creates a different pattern depending on method of application and tools used.  Colored crackling is covered in Fundamentals I.

AquaSize™ is the first step in both the CrackleMate™ and AquaCrackle® systems™.  The glue like material is the first step when creating unusual crackle designs ranging from small random cracks to large California style cracks.

CrackleMate™ transforms latex paints and AquaBond™ into crackle mediums.  Using more CrackeMate™ will yield bigger cracks.
